THE PRIMATE TRUST
The UK based charity was founded in 2012 and Registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (No. 1151642) by Jo and John Hicks who have 20 years of hands on experience working with primates in the UK and India. They have been at the forefront of animal welfare around the world for over 40 years.
John was co-opted onto the esteemed Indian Governments, Animal Welfare Board of India in recognition of his tireless dedication and achievements in the field of animal welfare.
The UK Charity is a fundraising arm to support the work that is carried out by the Primate Trust India.
JOHN HICKS : We are sad to announce that John Hicks passed away on 27th February 2015. John had been recovering from a Cancer Operation, but was rushed to hospital and died hours later with Jo at his side. The work at Primate Trust continues through Jo and the staff.
PRIMATE TRUST INDIA
The Primate Trust India was started in 2005 and registered as a charity in India in 2010 by Jo and John Hicks and provides long term care to orphaned, abused and injured primates. This work is essential due to the loss of natural habitat, human conflict causing an increasing number of injured and orphaned monkeys. Other monkeys are rescued from being illegally kept as pets often in appalling conditions.
The work is carried out at The Tree House located in North Goa by a dedicated team of carers working with Jo and John.
The Trust provides the monkeys with a stimulating environment and excellent food to ensure both their physical and mental health. They are provided with first-class medical treatment and injured monkeys are given 24-hour care to do everything possible to ensure their recovery.
Orphaned babies, usually handed to the Trust from the Goa Government Forestry Department, are hand-reared with as much love and devotion as any human baby would receive and are never left alone during their first year of life.
The Trust also advises rescue centres throughout India on the care and keeping of primates and does all it can to educate about the importance of good housing, good food and the vital importance of environmental enrichment to stimulate the monkeys active intelligent minds.
